My Planning for Eid

Before I say anything, first wish me happy Eid as I am going on short break so will not be accessible for some day. You need to wish if you want to have any chance of getting SEWAI from my side. J

Well finally I am beaming with happiness; I have reached the day when I will leave for my home to celebrate Eid with them. Eid happiness can’t be matched by any other thing in my life. Before I sigh off I have so many work left with me to do and yet so little time is there with me. This time I have made a small list which I am going to follow up while I am in the home so that it can be organized trip. Well there are so many things but only few will be getting listed here.
  1.  Shopping: Usually this is the last in my priority list but this time it is on my priority list number one. I have not done shopping for Eid and more so not for this month. Well I am so lazy in shopping that I let the all discount go by and now I am feeling the heat of not buying something.
  2.  Ramazan Iftar party: This is one thing which I miss in the Delhi in Ramazan. When I am at home we used to have Iftar party where all of use to enjoy the Iftar. Iftar is time when we all end our fast for day. I miss the Jalebi, the sweet dishes and also the chaat. Well I can’t wait to get my hand on all of these things.
  3.  Meeting friends: Well usually we all meet in the Eid party but this time I also want to meet them before and after it as I am on extended leave.
  4.  Eidee: Well this is the thing for which I used to wait for Eid for whole year. Still I get money from my mom and nani but now my outflow has grown much more than inflow. As there are younger in my family now and I am older now. L
Well this is a small list which I made but more I am keeping secret. Well I hope this Eid bring happiness in all of us life. Don’t forget to wish me Happy Eid in advance.

P.S.: For first time I am feeling so happy, “Main kuch hoo aaaj khaa maa khaaaa”…J

Ramadan a Holy Month for Muslims

What is the history of Ramadan?
Ramadan is the 9th month of the Islamic calendar. The term Ramadan literally means scorching in Arabic. It was established as a Holy Month for Muslims after the Quran was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad in 610 CE on the occasion known as Laylat al-Qadr, frequently translated as "the Night of Power.
Observance of Ramadan is mandated in the Quran, Surah 2, Ayah 185:
“The month of Ramadhan [is that] in which was revealed the Qur'an, guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion. So whoever sights [the new moon of] the month, let him fast it; and whoever is ill or on a journey - then an equal number of other days. Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship and [wants] for you to complete the period and to glorify Allah for that [to] which He has guided you; and perhaps you will be grateful.”

What are the dates of Ramadan?
Because the cycle of the lunar calendar does not match the solar calendar, the dates of Ramadan shifts by approximately 11 days each year. In 2011, Ramadan began on August 1st. In 2012 Ramadan is likely to begin on July 20th.
The ending of Ramadan is marked by the holiday of Eid ul-Fitr, which takes place either 29 or 30 days after the beginning of the month. On Eid ul-Fitr, morning prayers are followed by feasting and celebration among family and friends. This year Eid ul-Fitr will most probably fall on Sunday, August 19th.

What are the daily fasting requirements?
During the month of Ramadan, most Muslims fast from dawn to sunset with no food or water. Before sunrise many Muslims have the Suhur or predawn meal. At sunset families and friends gather for Iftar which is the meal eaten by Muslims to break the fast. Many Muslims begin the meal by eating dates as the Prophet used to do.
This ritual fast known as, Sawm, is one of the five pillars of Islam, and requires that individuals abstain from eating, drinking, smoking and sexual intercourse.

What are the expectations towards charity?
Charity is an important part of Ramadan. The fast emphasizes self-sacrifice and using the experience of hunger to grow in empathy with the hungry. During Ramadan, Muslim communities work together to raise money for the poor, donate clothes and food, and hold iftar dinners for the less fortunate.

What scriptural study do Muslims take part in?
Many Muslims use Ramadan to read the entire Quran or read the Quran daily. Many communities divide the Quran into daily reading segments that conclude on Eid ul-Fitr at the end of Ramadan.

Can non-Muslims participate?
Non-Muslims are free to participate in Ramadam. Many non-Muslims fast and even pray with their Muslim friends or family members. Non-Muslims are often invited to attend prayer and iftar dinners.
Those wishing to be polite to someone who is fasting for Ramadan may greet them with Ramadan Mubarak or Ramadan Kareem, which mean Have a Blessed or Generous Ramadan.

What is the 'goal' of Ramadan?
In general, the practices of Ramadan are meant to purify oneself from thoughts and deeds which are counter to Islam. By removing material desires, one is able to focus fully on devotion and service to God. Many Muslims go beyond the physical ritual of fasting and attempt to purge themselves of impure thoughts and motivations such as anger, cursing, and greed.

Do all Muslims take part in Ramadan fasting?
Most Muslims believe Ramadan fasting is mandatory, but there are some groups that do not. Pregnant or breastfeeding mothers, people who are seriously sick, travelers, or those at health risk should not fast. Children that have not gone through puberty are also not required to fast during the month Ramadan.

My EIDEE and Happiness I found in it

As a Kid I always used to wait for Eid time to come around. It was the most celebrated festival in my house; it is the only time when you see everyone with brand new cloths and Eating lots of SEWAI. Personally speaking I used to wait for Eid day since the start of Holy month Ramadan. This was the only day when I use to get EIDEE form all the elders in house, family and relatives.

Those who are not aware of concept of EIDEE let me tell you. EIDEE is given to the children in family either in form cash or by any other way. Please note what I am saying may not be accurate but this was my interpretation as a KID.

I think now everybody would know why I used to wait for EID so much, simply because it was the only time when I used to get the money from all the elder people in my family and relative. I still remember my highest collection of EIDEE was around 200 Bucks but was the most cherished money I have ever collected in my life. Just to get involved in competition that who has the highest EIDEE in all of the cousins gives you a felling that you are most loved one among all. And being the youngest one in family always give you chance to get more EIDEE than the elder ones. But sad part is, it might be taken away from you by mom or any elder one you trust.  The pet dialog they will use is,” we will safeguard you money otherwise you will lose it”. And believe me you will never ever get the money back.

It was more about enjoying the spirit of the EID. As the time had passed, my love for EIDEE has dipped a bit but not gone. I still take EIDEE from my Nani and try to make sure that I do not spend that money for whole year.  Some time I have been successful and most of time I haven’t able to stop my tendency to buy something from that money.

Now in my family all of us do not meet often and the free spirit to celebrate is gone but still EID is same and so is EIDEE. It has been the best part of my life to live the EID in the best possible way and enjoy the movement in it.

For me personally last two EID has been different. Now I am also one of those who may have to give EIDEE rather than take it. How strange it may sound but that’s the reality that someone younger than me is now there in family. So it is time to give the EIDEE rather than take it and let them feel the same joy  that I used to get even in 10 bucks at my childhood. It is hard to forget those days. Maybe this EID will bring more happiness in life so we could just one again remember the good old days.

P.S.: All the elders please do not forget to give the EIDEE to all of your younger ones in this EID. Drop us mail iecmba2009.11@gmail.com if you want to share your sweet memories with us.
