Jagjeet Singh: My memories of Ghazal King

The first time I got to listen to Ghazal was in the class 5th, it was occasion of family gathering and one of my cousin introduced to Mr. Jagjeet singh. I think it was, “Sarakti Jaye rukh se nakab, ashista aahista” and after that over the years I have been listening to him and have been following him over there.

His voice and his music has been the leading the Ghazal tradition in the India for long time, he was the only know face of Ghazal to the new generation and people listen to him much more then what is written and hear about it. Today you can see an empty space in the Ghazal scene and there is not one who can replace him.

Few Ghazal collection which has been part of my life..

1. Mujhko yakeen hai sach kahti thi jo bhi aami kahti thi

2. Sarakti jaye hai rukh se naqa

3. Sunte hai mil jati h hair cheez dua se

4. Tamana phir machal jaye agar tum milne aa jaye

5. Tum itna jo muskura rahe ho

6. Mere dil me tu hi tu hai dil ki dua kya kar

P.S.: If you have some more classic Ghazal which has been part of your memory do share with us. I like his recent one, " Tu ambar ki ankh ka tara, mere chote haath sajan main bhool gayi ye baat"..

sarakatii jaaye hai rukh se naqaab aahistaa-aahistaa

This one I find a unique comparison between one of my favorite Ghazal. One version is from film and other one is of Ghazal. My personal choice is with Jagjit Singh. But I am sure Kishor da one is also different from what I am used to this Ghazal. It was pleasant surprise to here you favorite song in different mood. :)

This is filmi version of this urdu Ghazal sung by Kishor kumar and Lata ji.
Now let see same in the voice of some Ghazal singer...

sarakatii jaaye hai rukh se naqaab aahistaa-aahistaa
nikalataa aa rahaa hai aaftaab aahistaa-aahistaa

jawaan hone lage jab vo to ham se kar liyaa pardaa
hayaa yakalakht aayii aur shabaab aahistaa-aahistaa

shab-e-furkat kaa jaagaa huun farishton ab to sone do
kabhii fursat mein kar lenaa hisaab aahistaa-aahistaa

savaal-e-vasl par unako uduu kaa Khauf hai itanaa
vo honthon se dete hain javaab aahistaa aahistaa

hamaare aur tumhaare pyar mein bas fark hai itanaa
idhar to jaldii jaldii hai udhar aahistaa aahistaa

vo bedardii se sar kaaTe "ameer" aur mai.n kahun un se
huzuur aahistaa aahistaa, janaab aahistaa-aahistaa

Jagjit Singh: Ghazal lost its last King

Today god have taken away a beautiful soul on his arms from us. The king of Ghazals Jagjit Singh.
On 1941 in Rajsthan he was born in a Sikh family but the introduction of his life is not complete without his beautiful Ghazals.
Jagjit Singh was the voice of many Sayers of urdu & hindi poetry including Ghalib. He was the bridge of ganga jamuni tahjib. Who link the equality, not caste and made his music as religion to his lover.
But Time......!!!
Just can only say his famous Ghazal lines:

Admi bulbula he pani ka,
Or pani ki sathe par....
Tutha bhi he,
Dubta bhi he,
Fir ubharta he.
Fir se bahta he.
Na samunder nigal ska isko,
Na tarikh tod payi he.
Waqt ki mauz par sada bahta,
Admi bulbula he pani ka...

¤ I dedicate few lines for him...
zindgi ki tanhaio me,
ghir k jab tanha hua..
dard k pamano me dub kar,
jab jab bahe..
tab tab teri awaj sunkr,
dil se bas itna kha..
"A Dile nada tujhe hua kya",
"gam ka khajana tera bhi he mera bhi"

¤Bhari ankho se-Chalta hu
